During the lunch hour, I also had the opportunity to assist, participate and observe the beading and drumming club. Both clubs had an FMNI focus, namely Blackfoot. I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of these groups. In beading club I even had the good fortune to make some beading myself. I loved making my key-chain. I was also so amazed at the creativity in original beading designs from the students.
I have had the pleasure, over the past couple months, of spending time with the students doing extracurricular activities. I arrived at SFJH early each day in order to assist Mrs. Woitte with the breakfast club. I really enjoyed getting know students in a different capacity. For my first lesson for all my classes, I have decided to have the students complete a student interest survey as well as a learning strengths inventory. This will help me to get to know the students better and know how to best teach them. As a farewell gesture to our students, Tina and I made some elf treats. I had found the idea on Pintrest but it, of course, did not work perfectly as described in the pin the first couple tries. After some adjusting we had a system figured out and a few (more like 5) hours later we had all our elves ready to go for our students.
Tina and I got to take our teaching out of the classroom today. We had the pleasure of teaching Cooking Club to the grade 4s in Burdett School. We taught our class at the community hall in Burdett which is only about a block from the school. I really had fun doing this lesson. It was also a good opportunity to get to know students in a non-traditional learning environment. Today, I taught my first lesson in PSI! I was really anxious and nervous going in but once I got started the feelings simmered down. I was introducing the grade 5's to their new unit in science - Chemistry. I started off the unit with the one and only Bill Nye the Science Guy video! I loved watching Bill Nye when I was in school and I am thrilled to see that this generation is just as enthusiastic about this scientist. My lesson went fairly well. There were a couple of blips but I worked through them. The first issue was that the lesson before ran late and really interfered with my lesson. I adapted, but there was not much time for the students to work on their unit title pages. In addition, I had some technical difficulties. Fortunately, the students and Mrs. Andreas were quick to help out. The first video didn't load but it wasn't a big deal, instead I went over the concept with the students without the technology. I was however sad I didn't get to use my smartboard activity that worked hard on. However, I was glad that I decided to introduce myself and go over my classroom expectations and I feel that it really helped to begin building a relationship with the students.
